An Open Letter to My Son or Anyone with Drug Addiction

There comes a point in time in our lives when strength alone is not enough.

A point where your ability to move yourself that one extra step is absent; gone; like a whisper of smoke in the twilight.

There comes a time when you are only as strong as the people around you. I have seen you struggle with yourself, and your problems, trying to figure out what it would take to get out of the rut you find yourself in. I have seen you give in to the anger and frustration, shutting yourself away from a world that never fails to misunderstand you.

I have seen you try to cope using methods that could only make things worse. I cannot imagine the manner of hurt, frustration, or loss that could have set you down the dark path you are on, but I can tell you this-you are not alone! And, because of that, you are strong- stronger than you could ever imagine.

Open your eyes once more to the many people around you who are willing to help you face the fear, struggle, and confusion that is a part of everyday life.

Receive the strength offered by their outstretched arms.

The road to recovery is long and tedious, riddled with false starts and pitfalls.

You may have to fight a battle more than once to win it. But never, never, say, think, or feel that you are not strong enough.
